Rules of Fair Chase
Animals shall not qualify for recognition in the CBH/SAA Records Book if they were:
- Helpless in or because of deep snow, or helpless on ice.
- Swimming in a lake, stream, or any amount of water which hinders his normal defense abilities.
- Helpless in a trap.
- Confined behind fences (as on game farms, etc.).
- Taken in defiance of game laws or out of season.
- Taken by “jacklighting” or shining at night (except where California hunting regulations permit).
- Taken by the use of any power-driven vehicle used for herding or driving any animals, including the use of aircraft for landing alongside of any animal or herd, or to communicate with or direct a hunter on the ground.
- Taken by the use of tranquilizers, poison, or firearms.
- Taken by the use of electronic devices for attracting, locating, or pursuing game or guiding a hunter to such game (Exception: see Section 263 Paragraph 475b of the California Department of Fish and Game regulations which allows electronic devices for coyote and bobcat).
- In any other condition considered as unsportsmanlike conduct by the Big Game Committee members.
